East Wheal Rose St Newlyn East
East Wheal Rose was the largest producer of lead in Cornwall producing half of the entire counties output.
On July 9th 1846 a violent thunderstorm which lasted over an hour and started just after midday rapidly flooded the mine up to the 50 fathom level.
Around 200 miners were underground at the time 39 never made it to surface.
The mine was forked and re opened finally closing in 1886 by that time it had a 90 inch engine supplied by Harvey’s of Hayle.
